The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) has set an ambitious goal to expand its fleet to 50,000 operational buses by 2030. However, current data reveals that nearly 50% of its existing fleet is nearing the end of its service life, raising concerns about meeting this target.
- Current Fleet and Additions: UPSRTC currently operates 12,300 buses. In June, the fleet grew by 500 buses, and another 2,000 are expected by next year.
- Challenge of Aging Buses: The pace of adding new buses is slower compared to the rate at which older buses are being retired, casting doubt on achieving the 50,000-bus goal.
Panic Button Installation Issues
- Partial Implementation: Earlier this year, UPSRTC introduced ‘panic buttons’ for passenger safety, but only 5,000 out of the planned 6,000 buses received this feature.
- Focus on Newer Buses: UPSRTC’s General Manager, Yajuvendra Kumar, explained that older buses, soon to be retired, were not fitted with panic buttons. New additions to the fleet will come equipped with these safety features.
Concerns Over Bus Safety
- Fleet Condition: Nearly 5,000 of the remaining buses lack both the new safety features and adequate maintenance, despite frequent accidents linked to driver errors.
- Accident Statistics: In 2023, Uttar Pradesh reported 44,534 road accidents, resulting in 23,652 fatalities and 31,098 injuries.
Regulatory Actions and Inspections
- Regular Checks: Following a government order, regular inspections are being conducted to ensure bus safety. ARMs and Regional Managers will be held accountable for any unfit vehicles in operation.
- Driver Accountability: The transport department is taking strict action against drivers and conductors who neglect vehicle maintenance or violate regulations.
Future Outlook
UPSRTC’s plan to expand its fleet to 50,000 buses remains a significant endeavor. However, balancing fleet expansion with maintaining safety and operational efficiency is crucial for meeting future goals and ensuring passenger safety.
