The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) added 55 new buses to its fleet, with Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar flagging off the buses at the M.G.R bus stand. This move comes in line with the government’s plans for the fiscal years 2023-24 and 2024-25 to enhance public transport services across the state.
TNSTC Increased Fleet and Allocations
- The government had announced plans to operate 2,000 buses for the fiscal years 2023-24 and 2024-25, with an allocation of funds for 3,000 buses for the latter year.
- Through the German development bank, KfW’s fund, Tamil Nadu has secured 2,666 buses. Madurai district alone will receive 361 buses, including 100 electric buses from the KfW fund.
- Additionally, 373 BS-VI buses and 307 extra buses from the 2024-25 allocation will benefit the district.
TNSTC Enhanced Services in Madurai Division
- Currently, the Madurai division operates 2,300 buses across Madurai, Dindigul, and Virudhunagar districts, with a workforce of 13,356 employees.
- These buses cover an estimated distance of 293.10 lakh km per month, benefiting approximately 3.18 crore passengers.
- Out of the 55 new buses, 39 will serve Madurai district, with three buses designated for new routes.
Officials Present at the Event
The flagging-off event was attended by Minister for Registration and Commercial Taxes P. Moorthy, Collector M.S. Sangeetha, Mayor V. Indirani Ponvasanth, and Corporation Commissioner C. Dinesh Kumar.
The addition of these new buses is expected to improve connectivity and enhance the public transport experience for commuters in Tamil Nadu.
