In a strategic move to manage the increasing passenger demand during weekends and festivals, the Tamil Nadu government has announced plans to hire private buses for operation across Chennai and ten surrounding districts.
Addressing Increased Demand
- Government Response: Transport Minister SS Sivashankar revealed that the decision comes in response to the significant increase in passenger numbers, particularly during peak travel times like extended holidays.
- Past Trends: The use of government buses surged during the 2021 elections, with around 1.5 lakh passengers, and nearly two lakh during the last general elections.
Implementation of Private Buses
- Operational Details: Private buses will be operated by private drivers to alleviate delays currently caused by the routing of government buses as special services.
- Tender Process: A tender for hiring private buses will be finalized by September 19, 2024.
- Cost-Efficiency: The approach is considered a cost-saving measure, as these buses will be utilized only for about 10 to 15 days each year.
Payment and Staffing
- Payment Model: While the exact payment structure for private buses is still under discussion, TNSTC officials propose a per-kilometer basis.
- Staffing Needs: Approximately 1,180 drivers and conductors will be involved in operating both private and government buses.
Fare Structure and Passenger Clarity
- No Change in Fares: Passengers will not see any changes in fare prices, and private buses will display the TNSTC logo to avoid confusion.
Opposition from Transport Unions
- Union Concerns: Despite the potential benefits, transport workers’ unions have expressed opposition, arguing that this move is an attempt at privatization.
- Previous Protests: Protests have already been organized against similar privatization efforts by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai regarding the purchase of electric buses.
This initiative aims to streamline transportation during high-demand periods while addressing concerns over delays and service availability for commuters in Tamil Nadu.
