The State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) is set to launch around 60 new long-distance sleeper buses connecting Chennai with the southern and western districts of Tamil Nadu. These buses, designed with significant improvements inspired by private services, will be introduced later this month.
Key Features and Improvements
- Durable Charging Sockets:
- USB chargers in older models have been replaced with more durable sockets.
- Accompanied by phone holders to prevent damage and improve convenience.
- Enhanced Privacy:
- Dividers between berths in the new sleeper-cum-seater buses.
- Leather and rexine seats replace cloth seats, simplifying maintenance and improving hygiene.
- Safety Upgrades:
- Fire detection and exhaust systems (FDDS) to ensure passenger safety.
- Microphone and speaker systems for conductors to announce upcoming bus stops.
Bus Configurations
- Mixed Layouts:
- 200 new buses in the current batch.
- 150 buses with seats on the lower deck and sleeper berths on the upper deck.
- 50 buses with a unique layout featuring five lower berths on the left-hand side reserved for women and children.
Launch Timeline
- First Batch:
- 60 sleeper-cum-seater buses to be launched this month.
- Remaining Buses:
- The rest of the buses are expected to be operational by September 15.
Cost-Cutting Measures
- Reduced Interior Lighting:
- Implemented to cut costs while maintaining functionality.
- No Blind Spot Mirrors:
- Omitted in the new design for cost efficiency.
