The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has taken a significant step towards sustainable transport by placing an order for 5,150 air-conditioned (AC) electric buses. The contract, valued at approximately Rs 10,000 crore, includes the supply, operation, and maintenance costs of the vehicles for up to 12 years. The move highlights the state’s commitment to promoting eco-friendly transportation options.
Contract Awarded to Olectra Greentech Limited and EVEY
The contract for the procurement of electric buses has been awarded to a consortium consisting of Olectra Greentech Limited and EVEY. The consortium will also be responsible for the electrical and civil infrastructure required for the fleet over a period of 12 years. Olectra Greentech Limited will supply the electric buses to EVEY, with deliveries scheduled to take place within 24 months.
2,800 AC Buses for Heavy Traffic Routes, 2,350 Buses for Lighter Traffic Routes
The newly procured fleet will comprise 2,800 12-metre-long AC buses, specifically designed for heavy traffic routes, and 2,350 nine-metre-long buses suitable for routes with lighter traffic. The seating capacities of these buses will be 43 and 30 passengers, respectively. This diversified fleet will cater to the varying demands of commuters.
MSRTC’s Commitment to Electric Mobility
Currently, out of the 14,000 buses operated by MSRTC, only 60 are electric-powered, with 50 running on compressed natural gas (CNG) and the remaining operating on diesel. The corporation aims to convert over 33% of its fleet into pollution-free electric buses by July 2025, aligning with its long-term sustainability goals. This massive procurement of electric buses will greatly contribute to reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.
First Batch of 150 Buses to Arrive by March 2024
The delivery of the 5,150 electric buses will be carried out in multiple phases. The first batch of 150 buses is expected to be delivered by March 2024, initiating the transition towards cleaner and greener public transportation. As these buses join the fleet, passengers can look forward to a more comfortable and eco-friendly commuting experience.
MSRTC’s Bus Fleet Important Pointers
- Total number of buses in the existing fleet: 14,000
- Number of AC buses: 1,000
- Number of electric buses: 60
- Number of buses running on CNG: 50
- Average daily ridership: 55 lakh
With the induction of the new electric buses, MSRTC aims to enhance its services, reduce its carbon footprint, and contribute to a cleaner environment. As the state embraces sustainable transport, passengers can expect an eco-friendly and efficient journey across Maharashtra.
