KSRTC is set to introduce 300 electric buses for intercity travel in Karnataka, enhancing eco-friendly transportation and efficiency. This initiative includes various bus types and routes, promoting greener travel options.

In a significant step towards sustainable public transportation, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced plans to introduce 300 electric buses across the state. This initiative is part of a leasing arrangement aimed at enhancing the efficiency and eco-friendliness of the intercity transport system.

Details of the Electric Buses

  • Tender and Contract: KSRTC has issued a tender for these buses, which will operate under a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model over 12 years.
  • Bus Types:
    • 205 non-air-conditioned intercity buses (12-metre) with 2×3 seating arrangements.
    • 75 deluxe intercity buses equipped with air conditioning and 2×2 reclining seats.
    • 20 non-AC city buses featuring a 2×2 seating configuration.

Routes and Operations

  • Intercity Routes: These electric buses will serve intercity routes from Bengaluru and other major cities such as Mangaluru and Mysuru.
  • Lease Model: Similar to the previously launched ‘EV Power Plus’ fleet, the new buses will be inducted under a lease model. KSRTC will provide conductors, while a private firm will handle hiring drivers, bus operations, maintenance, and establishing charging infrastructure. The firm will be compensated on a per-kilometre rate.

Previous Initiatives

  • EV Power Plus: In January 2023, KSRTC introduced 50 intercity AC electric buses branded as ‘EV Power Plus.’ These buses operate on routes from Bengaluru to various destinations, including Mysuru, Madikeri, Virajpet, Shivamogga, Davanagere, and Chikkamagaluru. This initiative is under the FAME-2 scheme, with operational costs covered at ₹55 per kilometre.

Operational Requirements and Environmental Impact

  • Daily Coverage: Each bus is required to cover 250 kilometres daily, with a minimum of 180 kilometres on a single charge.
  • Environmental Benefits: This strategic move is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions and promote greener travel options in Karnataka.

Future Plans for Airavat Fleet

  • New Additions: KSRTC has recently issued a tender to add new Airavat Club Class and Airavat sleeper buses to its fleet, aiming to enhance the comfort of long-distance travellers. This tender seeks to induct 40 new buses, replacing the ageing Airavat models currently in service.

KSRTC’s introduction of 300 electric buses marks a major advancement in sustainable public transportation. With these eco-friendly buses, the corporation aims to offer efficient and comfortable travel options while significantly reducing carbon emissions across Karnataka.
