The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) launched a fleet of 40 new non-air conditioned sleeper buses named “Pallakki” on 07th October, in response to the increasing demand for this mode of transportation. These buses, built by S. M. Kannappa Automobiles Pvt Ltd under the brand name “Prakash,” offer a cost-effective alternative to the more upscale Scania, Volvo, and Benz buses in the KSRTC’s fleet.
KSRTC Addressing the Growing Demand
The decision to add the “Pallakki” buses comes as a response to the surging popularity of sleeper buses in the state of Karnataka. In particular, the demand has grown since the introduction of the “Shakti” scheme by the previous Siddaramaiah-led Congress government, which provided free bus travel to all women across the state. The scheme played a significant role in the Congress party’s victory in the May 10 assembly polls, making it one of the five key election promises.
KSRTC Fleet Expansion
To cater to the increasing demand, the four transport corporations in Karnataka – KSRTC, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC), and the Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) – are collectively planning to procure a total of 1,894 new buses in the current year.
About the KSRTC ‘Pallakki’ Buses
The “Pallakki” buses are expected to be a game-changer for both regular bus commuters and travelers who prefer non-air-conditioned sleeper buses. These buses are not only cost-effective but also promise a comfortable and convenient journey experience.

The addition of the “Pallakki” non-AC sleeper buses to the KSRTC fleet is a significant development that will cater to the rising demand for comfortable and budget-friendly bus travel options in Karnataka. As the state continues to expand its transportation services, this move reflects the government’s commitment to providing accessible and affordable travel choices for its citizens.
