The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is set to revolutionize intercity travel by introducing 300 new electric buses. This eco-friendly initiative will see 225 non-AC and 75 AC electric buses deployed on various routes, reinforcing KSRTC’s commitment to sustainable transportation.

Key Details of the Initiative

  • Bus Types and Seating Configurations:
    • Non-AC Intercity Buses: 205 buses with 2×3 seating.
    • Deluxe AC Intercity Buses: 75 buses with reclining seats in a 2×2 configuration.
    • Non-AC City Buses: 20 buses with 2×2 seating.

Focus on Intercity Routes

The electric buses will serve major intercity routes including:

  • Bengaluru-Tumakuru
  • Bengaluru-Kolar
  • Bengaluru-Chikkaballapur

Distribution of Buses:

  • Tumakuru: 50 buses
  • Kolar: 45 buses
  • Mangaluru: 45 buses
  • Chikkaballapur: 40 buses
  • Puttur: 40 buses
  • Mysuru Rural: 30 buses
  • Mysuru Urban: 20 buses
  • Ramanagara: 20 buses

Operational Model and Requirements

KSRTC will adopt a Gross Cost Contract model for a 12-year duration:

  • Lease Model: KSRTC will provide the conductor, while a private firm will hire drivers, operate and maintain the buses, and establish charging infrastructure.
  • Payment: The private firm will be paid on a per km basis.
  • Daily Operation: Each bus must operate at least 250 km daily and can cover up to 180 km on a single charge.

Safety and Comfort Features

  • Equipped with CCTVs, panic buttons, dash cameras, and other safety features to enhance passenger security.

Expanding the Fleet

  • Diesel Buses: KSRTC has invited tenders for 70 BS-VI diesel fully built non-AC sleeper coaches and 30 seater-cum-sleeper coaches to diversify their fleet.

Previous Electric Bus Launch

  • In January 2023, under the Centre’s FAME-II subsidy scheme, KSRTC launched 50 e-buses on routes from Bengaluru to destinations like Mysuru, Madikeri, Virajpet, Davanagere, Shivamogga, and Chikkamagaluru.
