Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated 20 new e-buses, further expanding the fleet of electric buses in the state. With this addition, the total number of e-buses in Shimla has reached 70, with the overall count for the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) now standing at 90. The move is part of the government's commitment to promote eco-friendly transportation options and reduce carbon emissions.

During his interaction with the media, CM Sukhu highlighted the advantages of e-buses, emphasizing their lower operational cost, which stands at approximately Rs. 25 per kilometer, significantly lower than diesel buses. By incorporating electric vehicles into the transportation system, the state aims to contribute to environmental preservation and mitigate the impact of climate change.

Expansion Plans and Phased Transition

The HRTC has issued a tender for 75 Type-I e-buses to be deployed in Shimla Local and Nadaun, while technical specifications for 225 Type-II e-buses to replace existing diesel buses have been finalized. The government plans to gradually replace the entire fleet of 1,500 HRTC buses with e-buses. Simultaneously, infrastructure development is underway to support the growing number of electric vehicles on the roads.

Green Energy State Vision

CM Sukhu outlined the government’s vision to transform Himachal Pradesh into a “Green Energy State” by March 31, 2026. In line with this goal, the state’s budget includes provisions and initiatives to promote renewable energy and sustainable practices. The adoption of electric buses is a significant step towards achieving a greener and more sustainable transportation system.

CM Leads by Example

To showcase the reliability and efficiency of e-buses, Chief Minister Sukhu personally traveled in one of the newly inaugurated vehicles from Chaura Maidan to the HP Secretariat to attend a Cabinet meeting. His active participation demonstrates the government’s commitment to prioritizing eco-friendly transportation alternatives and leading by example.

Promoting Sustainable Transportation for a Greener Future

With the addition of 20 new e-buses, Himachal Pradesh is making notable progress in transitioning to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation system. By embracing electric mobility, the state aims to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and contribute to the larger global effort in combatting climate change. As the e-bus fleet continues to expand, residents and tourists alike can look forward to cleaner and greener transportation options in the picturesque state of Himachal Pradesh.
